General Information

Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate) is indicated for the treatment of a manic-depressive disorder or also known as bipolar disorder. It is a mental disorder that causes periods of depression and periods of abnormally elevated mood.

Some of the benefits of continued use of this drug include lessening how frequently manic episodes occur. It also decreases the symptoms of manic episodes, such as:

  • feelings that others wish to harm you
  • exaggerated feelings of well-being
  • anxiousness
  • irritability
  • aggressive or hostile behaviors
  • rapid or loud speech

 

How does Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate) work?

Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate) works by calming the mood and decreases extremes in behavior. It is by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

The neurotransmitter is a type of chemical messenger which transmits signals across a chemical synapse, such as a neuromuscular junction. It is from one neuron (nerve cell) to another ‘target’ neuron, gland cell, or muscle cell.

 

Why use Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate)?

Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate) belongs to the group of medications known as mood stabilizers. This drug is used to decrease the intensity of manic episodes or to prevent it among people with bipolar disorder. This is available as tablets for oral administration. Each tablet has 300mg of Lithium Carbonate as an active ingredient. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this medication.

 

How to use Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate)?

The recommended dosage is based on your response, condition, and other medications that you are taking. Follow the prescription of your doctor very carefully. Do not take it larger than the prescribed amount. Do not also take it more often than prescribed.

This drug is to be taken by mouth with a full glass of water. It is usually taken 3 to 4 times a day. You may take it with a meal or right after a meal to lessen stomach upset.

Warnings and Precautions

  • This drug may make you feel dizzy or drowsy that may cause blurred vision. Avoid driving or using any machinery that requires your alertness.
  • Consult your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Keep this away from the reach of children. Keep this also at a dry and clean place as well as from heat and moisture.
