Coping Loneliness During Pandemic

You could be self-isolating because of infection and other reasons that you’ve elected to stay indoors. Whether you are quarantined because of exposure, you are in a high-risk group, or just at home to prevent the spread of the infection, you may find yourself unprepared for being lonely that is likely to follow. 

Social Isolation and Loneliness

It is very important to take care of your mental health during times of decreased social interactions. It’s normal to feel stress when faced with staying indoors. This factor could increase your chance of developing depression and anxiety. While social distancing is about avoiding large gatherings of people and only going out for essentials, it can still be frustrating. You can be stigmatized if you are isolated because you suspect you have the virus or you’ve contracted the virus. 

There are lots of strategies that you can employ to ensure your mental well-being.

1. Keep To A Schedule 

Even if you are isolated at home, give the effort to maintain your regular schedule. Loneliness might feel like it will never end, but try to make these days feel as normal as possible that you can go through. Begin your day with a plan of a few things, keep a daily diary about how you are feeling, and keep a symptom log if you manage any certain illness.  

2. Stay Informed 

Limit your time on social media and news. Just make sure you’re up-to-date about what is going on in your community. Watching too much news, and reading too many articles about the current circumstances can be overwhelming. You may want to check these platforms twice a day just make sure you take information on sites that give factual news about what you can do to stay healthy. 

3. Do Something Meaningful 

Another factor that can contribute to loneliness is a loss of sense of meaning. If you feel that you are not just bored but you feel like you are losing your sense of self, the loss of meaning might be affecting you. If you don’t know how to cope with this situation, don’t hesitate to seek help. You can call your friend or trusted family member and talk about what you are going through. 

4. Connect

The best thing you can do to fight loneliness during a pandemic is to connect with others. You might be distanced physically and socially but there are certain ways where you can be connected with your loved ones. 

5. Create Something

Expressing yourself from creating means could be therapeutic. You can try:

  • Writing a journal, poetry, or short stories 
  • Compile a photo album that you can share with others 
  • Redecorate your room or any part of your house

If you find it hard to look for projects, focus on the ones that you can do or what you have on hand. Using those few basic tools, you are sure to find something online to get you started. 

Boost your mental health. Establish things that can make you happy and do the things that you enjoy doing. If no one can help you, help yourself.
